BMW unveils world’s first colour-changing concept car

In living colour.

Imagine letting everyone on the road know your mood without telling them how you feel.

With BMW’s new i Vision Dee concept car, this can well be a reality in the near future.

Billed as the world’s first colour-changing car, it can switch between 32 colours which can be individually configured using 240 different exterior panel segments. Imagine the variety of patterns that can be generated – whenever you feel like – within seconds!

The exterior skin of the BMW i Vision Dee is coated with millions of microcapsules containing colour pigments that are activated when electricity is applied. This coated film is produced by a start-up called E Ink. It promises to be ultra-low power, so there is no worry about the electric vehicle’s battery being drained from changing its colours.

An intelligent companion on the road

The “Dee” in the name of this electric sports sedan stands for Digital Emotional Experience. According to BMW, it reflects the aim to create an even stronger bond between people and their cars.

Other than the colour-changing technology, BMW is also working on future digital functions beyond the voice control and driver assistance systems we are already used to today.

For example, the Advanced BMW Heads-Up Display will extend across the entire width of the windscreen. There is also a Mixed Reality Slider, which uses shy-tech sensors on the instrument panel for drivers to choose – by moving their fingers along a five-step slider – how much digital content they want to see on the display. This includes driving-related information, and even augmented-reality projection.

You can expect to see both new tech in BMW’s NEUE KLASSE models, which are set to debut from 2025.
