We pick up (couldn’t resist it!) our series on car body types with the pick-up truck. It is also known as a ute (that’s for utility vehicle) in Australia and New Zealand.
Once seen as a functional means for transporting and delivering goods, the pick-up has become a lifestyle choice for some drivers these days. Different brands and models have also picked up (we couldn’t resist again!) on the cool factor when it comes to design, style and even, performance.
Pick-up truck
It is easy to pick out a pick-up truck. It has an enclosed passenger cabin and an open cargo area with low sides and a tailgate. Usually, there are one or two rows of seating.
Pick-up trucks were originally meant as workhorses. They are great for hauling and towing, as well as transporting large goods.
Today, they can be both a comfortable and roomy passenger ride while retaining its powerful off-roading capabilities and muscle-y ability to haul heavy loads. Some manufacturers have even gone upscale by rolling out luxury pick-ups filled with all manner of connectivity and capabilities.

Suitable for:
In Singapore, a pickup is classified as a commercial vehicle, and falls under the Goods-Cum-Passenger Vehicles category. That means only registered companies can purchase one. The Certificate of Entitlement (COE) for pickups are under Category C.
Bummer, but otherwise, it would have been suitable for drivers who need to like to drive through rougher terrain or who need to tow or transport heavyweight items. Or drivers who just want to look cool in one of the stylish pickups from Ford.
