That fifth door.
There are so many car body types these days that it can get quite confusing when people start throwing terms like cabriolet, crossovers, roadsters and sports activity coupes at you. Don’t worry, we’ve got your back! In our “Know your car body type” series, we take a look at the versatile hatchback.
What is a hatchback?
A hatchback is a compact car in which the boot area is part of the main interior instead of a separate section. The lid of the boot or hatch is hinged at the roof at the rear of the car. It is thus often referred to as the fifth door of the vehicle. When you lift the boot, you lift the car’s rear window at the same time.
This larger opening at the back of the car makes it easier to load bulky items. With the rear seats folded down, a hatchback can also yield up additional loading space.
Despite its expansive interior, hatchbacks are very compact and fuel-efficient. Which means you will have a much easier time with parking.
Some premium hatchbacks are very well-specced and can offer a powerful ride, like the BMW 1 series (pictured).
Suitable for:
As they are reasonably priced, hatchbacks can be the go-to cars for drivers on a budget or small families.
A hatchback is also great for those who want a smallish car but with loads of space for carrying stuff everywhere they go. And they don’t have to struggle with the parking.
Young professionals looking for a zippy, fun and compact ride will hop to it.
