Know your car body type – What is a Sedan?

When people think of cars or are asked to draw one, most would invariably come up with the shape of a sedan.

While most people might already be familiar with what a sedan is, we can’t miss out on covering it in our “Know your car body type” series.

It still holds the most recognisable shape for a car, and until recently, had an unassailable lead as the most popular car type in Singapore. Even as the popularity of SUVs surges, sedans have a loyal base of drivers who would always prefer its classic body type, drivability, safety record and overall fuel economy. Oh, and it is usually priced at a lower point than an SUV.

What is a Sedan?

A sedan, or saloon (as it is sometimes called), is the most common car body type today. If a car has four doors, two rows of comfortable seating and an enclosed boot separate from the passenger seats, it is a sedan.

Sedans are also designed to be closer to the ground and the low ride height means a lower centre of gravity. This translates to better driving dynamics, balance, and safety, which means you can take corners faster and tighter for example. You might feel those higher humps on the road though.

Suitable for:

Business executives looking to project a professional image. Sedans are usually smart-looking and offer good performance for everyday driving, especially in urban traffic.

You can’t go too wrong with a sedan as a family car either. There is enough legroom for a family of five to travel in comfort and style.  With their low solid design, sedans are also less likely to roll over than most other body types, making them a safer choice.

Many sedans now come as fully-electric vehicles or plug-in hybrids. This will suit those who want to embrace a more sustainable drive.
