What is an SUV?
A Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) refers to a car with a truck-like built and “utility” but drives like a sporty vehicle.
It is bigger than your average car with a raised roof and higher ground clearance to make it easier for off-road driving over rugged terrain. The higher seat position also gives the driver more visibility of the road ahead. SUVs typically have five or seven seats which make them great for ferrying people around comfortably.
You may also come across the term Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) or Sports Activity Coupe (SAC) with BMW models. That’s because of the German carmaker’s emphasis on complementing the “active” luxury lifestyle of most BMW drivers, through a balance of practicality and performance.
Because of their powerful engines, SUVs used to be known as gas-guzzlers. But with more models rolling out with electric drive trains such as the BMW X3 plug-in hybrid, and BYD Atto 3 (pictured), their popularity is set to rise.

Families! There’s a reason for the “luv” for SUVs; the vehicle can fit all that sport equipment heavy groceries, school bags, bulky prams … oh and yes, people.
If you are an adventure-seeker, an SUV is also a great companion as you rough and tumble your way to another off-road escapade.
On the other hand, a luxury SAV like the BMW X7, might fit those who believe that power and size matters, and with quality finishing and trimmings even better.
