Chic is the word.
The wind in your hair and the sun on your face. That liberating sense of freedom and adventure. It is this exhilarating connection to the elements that makes driving a car with the roof down such a draw for some drivers. We are of course referring to the cabriolet.
For those tripping over the word, cabriolet (it’s pronounced as “kare-bree-yoh-lay”), you might want to stick to using convertible instead. The name, “cabriolet” harks back to the car’s French origins. But both cabriolet and convertible are now used interchangeably.
What is a cabriolet or convertible?
If the car has a foldable or removable roof, then it is a cabriolet or convertible. Today, there is no functional difference between the two terms.
Typically, a cabriolet or a convertible comes with two doors and has two or four seats. Most have motorised hard or soft tops that can extend or retract in a few seconds. The soft top of the iconic BMW Z4 Roadster, for example, opens and closes in 10 seconds, even during the ride up to a speed of 50 km/h.
If you think about it, the first cars were all convertibles. One benefit of driving a convertible is you avoid blindspots when you have the top down. It also offers unlimited headroom – great if you are really tall!
But above all, driving a cabriolet is fun. There’s nothing like having the wind in your hair and the sun on your face (sunblock applicable in Singapore). Plus you will definitely attract a lot of admiring looks … for the car, at least.
Typically, fun-loving drivers who enjoy the thrill and freedom of an open-air driving experience would enjoy driving a convertible. As most convertibles do not have a lot of storage space, it is mainly singles or young urban couples who are likely to covet it.
Why drive a cabriolet?
Driving a cabriolet or convertible offers a unique and enjoyable experience for several reasons.
Open-air freedom: Cabriolets allow you to experience the thrill of driving with the top down, providing a sense of freedom and a closer connection to the world around you. This open-air driving experience can be particularly enjoyable during pleasant weather.
Immersive experience: Convertibles enable you to enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of the environment as you drive. You can feel the wind in your hair and listen to the sounds of nature or the cityscape around you, making your driving experience more immersive.
Aesthetic appeal: Many people are drawn to the sleek and stylish design of cabriolets. They often have an attractive and sporty appearance that can turn heads and make a statement.
Versatility: Cabriolets offer versatility in that you can choose to drive with the top up for a more traditional enclosed driving experience or have the top down when you want to enjoy the open air. This adaptability is great for different weather conditions and moods.
Special occasions: Convertibles are often associated with special occasions, such as romantic drives, weddings, or celebratory events. They can add a touch of luxury and elegance to these moments.
Should you drive a convertible?
However, it’s important to consider that cabriolets typically come with a few trade-offs, such as reduced cargo space and potentially higher costs. Given Singapore’s weather, you may also have to consider the practicality of driving a convertible.
Ultimately, whether or not driving a cabriolet is suitable for you is a matter of personal preference. It depends on your individual tastes, lifestyle, and priorities when it comes to your driving experience. Some people could simply enjoy the feeling of open-air driving and the unique character of convertibles.
