Make your used car last longer

Pre-loved is reloved.

You can find quality pre-owned cars that still have many good years left in them. But if you buy one and do not give it proper care, you might end up with problems prematurely. At the end of the day, your pre-owned car should have a lot of juice, and that it ain’t no lemon.

1. Regular servicing is a must

Check your vehicle manual and follow the recommended service schedule.

Send your car to a reputable dealer or auto service centre for checks and general vehicle maintenance. These include inspecting the brakes, checking your tyres, changing the motor oil, and replacing faulty parts.

By detecting and rectifying problems early on, you could stop these from worsening into a major issue and avoid having to pay a hefty bill later.

2. Warning lights mean something

If you see a strange light blinking in the instrument cluster, don’t ignore it. Check your vehicle manual to find out what the warning light mean. Some high-end car models have smart technology or apps that indicate what the problem is.

If you are still in doubt, consult your trusted auto service centre or dealer.

3. Check your tyres all the time

Tyres are one of the most important parts of the car. They hold your car to the ground and affect the acceleration and braking, handling, and even the fuel economy.

Before driving off, check if your tyres are under-inflated, have uneven wear patterns or show signs of balding.  Have your mechanic inflate, rotate, align or change the tyres if necessary.

4. Watch the fluids and filters

An average internal combustion engine car has around 30,000 moving parts and these depend on fluids like oil and coolant to run properly.

Outside of the scheduled maintenance for your used car, you should regularly check the fluid levels or change the filters.  This takes very time and knowledge to perform but does wonders in keeping your pre-owned car in better shape.

5. Don’t skim on the right parts

You might be tempted to ask or source for the cheapest parts and materials for your pre-owned car.

But that cheap fluid you insisted is as good as the expensive one recommended by the auto service centre may not last as long, and you end up having to pay to extra. There are also fluids and materials that may damage your car.

6. Keep it clean and mean

Dirt attracts scratches and tears. Other than washing your pre-owned car regularly, waxing it can help protect the body and paintwork. Vacuum the interior as well so your car looks good both inside and outside.

With proper care and good driving habits, your pre-owned car can give you as good a ride as a new one.
