Big benefits of a small car

Compact does not mean compromise.

Think small cars are just for people trying to save money on petrol? Think again.  Small cars, also called compact or compact-sized cars, have a lot to offer drivers. Keep these benefits in mind the next time you are in the market for a new vehicle, and see why there are many compelling reasons to get a small car.

1. Small cars are affordable.

One reason compact cars are attractive is because of their affordability. With rising COE prices, it will be kinder on your wallet to go for that hot hatchback or small sedan than an SUV.

Small cars may be cheaper to buy than bigger cars, but that’s not the only reason to consider one. They can also be cheaper to maintain, especially if you choose a model with fewer bells and whistles. With a small car, you can save money on things like oil changes, tune-ups, and repairs.

2. They are easier to park.

Small cars are easier to navigate and park than their larger counterparts. Try manoeuvring your SUV around the corners of some of Singapore’s multi-storey carparks. The paint scrapes on the walls tell a story!

Compact cars can also fit easily into tight parking spaces, so you are less likely to be accused of occupying an adjacent vehicle’s space.

3. They are more agile in traffic.

Their compact size makes small cars much more agile, allowing you to navigate traffic with ease. This can be a real boon during rush hour when the roads tend to be jammed with vehicles and progress is slow. This makes small cars ideal for driving around the city where there is heavier traffic.

4. Small cars have better mileage.

One of the main reasons people choose compact cars is because they offer better mileage. Smaller cars have smaller engines and are more fuel-efficient. It is great for driving on the urban roads of Singapore.

5. They are loaded with tech.

Large cars are not the only ones with all the specs. These days, compact cars come packed with the cutting-edge infotainment systems and the latest tech features.  Some, like the BMW 1 series come with driver assistance systems that used to be reserved for its larger counterparts.

6. Small cars can be spacious.

Thanks to space-maximising design, small cars have gotten roomier. They can seat a small family comfortably. With foldable rear seats, small cars can also yield more cargo space. For example, the BMW 116i has 380 litres of carrying capacity in its boot, which can be easily expanded to 1,200 litres with the rear bench folded down.

Small cars are the way to go.

To be fair, compact cars may not be for everyone. Those with a large family, or drivers who need to transport lots of bulky items would do better with a bigger vehicle.

But, if you are cool urbanite going from place to place around town, or if you usually drive solo, or if you have a small young family, then a small and compact car could be the way to go for you.
